Are you willing to drink the cup?
Are you willing to drink the cup that I must drink? (Matthew 20:22)
All of Jesus' talk about a kingdom filled James and John with illusions of grandeur, and they wanted the positions of honor, sitting on the right and left hand of Christ. When their mother came to Jesus and asked if her sons could sit by Him in the kingdom to come, Jesus did not deny her request. He didn't say yes either. He just turned toward James and John and asked them, "Are you willing to drink the cup that I must drink?"
And so Jesus ask this same question to anyone to desires to follow Him. "Count the cost," Jesus warns. "If they hate Me, they will hate you. If you want to reign with Me, you must suffer with Me. If you want to be great, become a servant. If you want to find your life, lose it first. If you want a crown, you must carry a cross."
The question is, "Are you willing?"
Anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. (Matthew 10:38)
